Sports-Related Dental Injuries

Woman boxer punched in facePlaying a sport takes practice and dedication. When people find a sport they enjoy, they can spend hours a day on it. Unfortunately, that exposes them to numerous sports-related injuries. That includes dental injuries like fractured or avulsed (knocked out) teeth. When that happens, it’s important that athletes know where to turn for help during a dental emergency. It’s also essential to protect patients’ smiles from this damage by wearing protective sportsguards during practices and athletic competitions.

Emergency Dental Care

If you experience a sports-related dental injury, take a deep breath. Then, carefully examine the damage, so you can clearly explain your situation to an emergency dentist. You can also do any of the following things to relieve pain and protect your smile:

  • Clean the area to prevent infection by swishing cool water to remove debris. Don’t brush or use toothpaste or mouthwash as this can cause more harm.
  • If a tooth, restoration, or large part of a tooth or restoration are knocked out, collect these to bring to the dentist.
  • If at all possible, replace an avulsed tooth or dental restoration.
  • If you cannot replace a tooth, store it in a container of milk or water.
  • Use over the counter pain relievers as directed and apply a cold compress at twenty minute intervals to prevent swelling and inflammation and reduce discomfort.
  • Most importantly, call your dental care provider right away. The majority of dental offices have contact information, so patients are able to reach them at any time. A knowledgeable dental care provider can also walk you through first aid and pain management tips to ensure your health and safety until you reach the office.

Common Dental Injuries for Athletes

When patients experience facial trauma during an athletic event, there are a wide range of dental injuries that can occur as a result. Some of the most common sports-related dental injuries include:

  • Knocked out teeth or dental restorations
  • Chipped or broken teeth and dental restorations
  • Soft tissue lacerations
  • Jaw or skull bone breaks or fractures

Preventing Dental Damage

To protect your smile from damage during an athletic event, wear a sportsguard during every practice or competition. The dentist can create a comfortable, custom mouthguard, or you can purchase over the counter guards. Store bought mouthguards are not as comfortable as a custom solution, but most dentists will help you fit the guard to maximize comfort, even if you choose a store bought appliance.
