While dental emergencies are not a welcome occurrence, it\u2019s best if you are prepared for when they occur. It\u2019s also important to find ways to avoid these types of situations, if possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Can Cause a Chipped Tooth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tooth enamel is meant to be strong and durable. Withstanding\nthe daily wear and tear you put on your teeth, it can take a lot for a chip to\noccur; however, that\u2019s not always the case with young, developing teeth or ones\nthat are worn down over time. If you\u2019re wondering what exactly can cause this\ntype of dental emergency, here are a few reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cavities<\/li><li>A misaligned bite<\/li><li>Biting into something hard or crunchy (i.e. ice,\nhard candy)<\/li><li>Serious trauma to the face or mouth<\/li><li>Poor oral hygiene<\/li><li>Bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Tell if It\u2019s an Emergency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It might always be easy to tell if the chipped tooth is a\nserious emergency, so if you want to err on the side of caution, it\u2019s always\nbest to call your dentist office and explain the situation. Based on the information\nyou provide, they will be able to tell you if you should seek immediate\ntreatment or will be fine waiting until you can get in to see an available\ndentist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most instances, a chipped tooth is something you want to\nhave fixed right away. The reason is that you want to avoid extraction if at\nall possible, and you want to prevent additional injury to your soft oral\ntissues or nearby teeth due to the jagged edges left by the chipped area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you see your dentist, make sure you keep the tooth\nclean and avoid chewing on that particular side of your mouth. This will reduce\nthe chances of the tooth coming into contact with anything that could potentially\nworsen your oral health or the tooth\u2019s natural structure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the severity of the chip, your dentist will\neither bond it using composite resin, fill it (if it\u2019s a minor chip), place a porcelain\nveneer over the problem tooth, or perform a root canal if the chip extends down\ndeep into the tooth\u2019s inner layer.
